Youth Orchestra of the Year
2012 Youth Orchestra of the Year Winners
Start Early - Nominate your Orchestra for 2013
At the Classics Alive Foundation, we feel our challenge as artists and teachers is to inspire young people through music and to keep them interested in the arts for a lifetime. Through our youth orchestra challenge we hope to foster a dialogue with orchestra members and encourage them to think more deeply about the role music plays in their lives and what it means to them. Also, by giving students the opportunity to bring special recognition to their community or school orchestra, we hope to enhance their feelings of pride and camaraderie with their fellow orchestra members.
The Youth Orchestra of the Year is awarded a $500 cash prize to be used for music or equipment, at the discretion of the orchestra manager or conductor. Runner-ups will receive cash prizes and/or gift certificates at participating music stores.
The nomination process will be completed exclusively by the youth orchestra students. They will respond to questions with regard to their involvement in music. We believe that by articulating answers to these questions, students will be encouraged to think about the importance of music in their lives and to realize that their involvement in the arts has contributed to their wholeness as a person. As a result, they will continue to make music and the arts a priority in their lives as adults, as well as making the decision to include the arts as a priority in their own children’s educations.
Partnering and Outreach - Classical Youth Challenge
We work together with youth orchestras and high school orchestras in various communities to produce family concerts for children and their parents to introduce young people to the performing arts and motivate them to attend more concerts.
We also provide outreach programs in which young artists visit schools to provide a "close and personal" experience to underprivileged students who would not ordinarily be exposed to classical music. Read a review of a recent Outreach Program by Lindsay Deutsch.

Meet the Maestro Program
"Meet the Maestro" program is designed to give kids (and parents) a behind the scenes look at famous orchestra conductors. Read the interesting interviews and if you have any questions that you would like us to ask a conductor, send us an email.
Mentoring
We provide master classes for young musicians to motivate and inspire them to improve and excel in their musical studies.
Scholarships
We provide scholarships for motivated young musicians who cannot afford lessons. We have two scholarships which are underwritten by donors:
Zina Drewes Scholarship - Available on a need basis for clarinet student in the Los Angeles Area.
Paula Mazon Scholarship - Available on a need basis for clarinet student in the Los Angeles Area.
If you are interested in applying for a scholarship, please email us for additional information and an application.
Create Opportunities
We facilitate and coordinate concerts performed by young musicians to provide performance experience for the performers and to inspire children in the audience to begin or continue music instruction.
Provide Role Models
Provide role models for the youth of today by publicizing the achievements of their peers who strive to excel and achieve their goals.
Visit the "For Kids" web page that Classics Alive sponsors. Included is information for kids and parents, activities, and selection of "Student Musician of the Month" and "Student Musician of the Year" contests.
